Bonus: Father’s Day gifts for wine- and whiskey-loving dads. If your favorite father is a wine lover, I recommend treating him to a bottle of the best wine I’ve tasted this year: 2023 DAOU Soul of a Lion (srp $150). “As the crown jewel of the DAOU portfolio, Soul of a Lion represents the pinnacle of our winemaking and is a true reflection of DAOU Mountain’s power and elegance,” said José Alberto Moreira dos Santos, General Manager and Senior Winemaker of DAOU Vineyards. “2023 was an exceptional year with long hang times and moderate temperatures, allowing us to achieve notable phenolic maturity while preserving freshness and natural acidity. It is a vintage showcasing both the technical precision and the artistry that defines Soul of a Lion.”
The folks at DAOU said, “Named in tribute to founders Georges and Daniel Daou’s father, Soul of a Lion honors the passion, perseverance, and enduring conviction to craft world-class Cabernet Sauvignon from Paso Robles. The 2023 vintage stands as a definitive expression of DAOU Mountain, precise and powerful, reinforcing its position as a defining icon of collectible California Cabernet. Crafted from meticulously selected parcels in the Adelaida District, the wine reflects a rare convergence of calcareous clay and limestone soils, a Mediterranean microclimate, and cooling Pacific influences, all ideal for Cabernet Sauvignon. Warm days and cool nights ensure balanced ripening and phenolic development, resulting in an age-worthy vintage of remarkable depth, structure, and longevity that reflects the power of place.”
This luscious blend of 76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 18% Cabernet Franc, and 6% Petit Verdot – aged for 22 months in new French oak barrels – displays saturated dark crimson and violet hues. On the nose, you’ll find dark berry aromas, cherry, toasted oak and subtle herb notes. Generous fruit flavors of blackberry, chocolate and cherry lead to polished tannins and long, luscious finish. Simply put, 2023 DAOU Soul of a Lion is the single best wine I’ve tasted in 2026 and worth every dime.

For whiskey aficionado fathers, I recommend giving Dad the High West X Huckberry gift set ($74.99). The distillers at High West said, “We teamed up with Huckberry for an epic set: 2 Huckberry-Exclusive Mt. Timpanogos Whiskey glasses with 1 bottle of Bourbon and Double Rye.”
Bourbon:
Rich and earthy on the palate with well balanced flavors of candy corn, honey nougat and sweet corn bread biscuits.
Double Rye:
Rye spices up front, then menthol, mint, eucalyptus, herbal tea with wildflower honey and all spice.
Huckberry Mt. Timpanogos Whiskey Glass Details:
Each glass features a raised topographic impression of Mt. Timpanogos, the second tallest mountain in the Wasatch Range and one of Utah’s most prominent natural features. Made from 100% lead-free handblown glass which is lighter than leaded glass and equally durable. Due to the handmade nature of glass blowing, each glass may have slight variation.
For golfing dads, High West also has an array of High West-themed golf gifts such as High West x Callaway Golf Balls, High West Golf Cap, High West Golf Gloves, High West Magnetic Golf Towel, and more.
Happy Father’s Day to all of the great Dads out there!
