For the Love of Beer: Appreciating the Artistry of Craft Beer

March 12, 2020 by Richard Markosian Leave a Comment

Growing up essentially LDS, It wasn’t until about 2002 that I understood the appeal of our local craft beer. I first discovered Uinta’s Cutthroat Pale Ale. Cutthroat was essentially Utah’s state beer named after our state fish. But I learned it was their attention to their hops that made the beer so consistently great. Originating from the Pacific Northwest, their unique pine … [Read more...]

New Law Opens Door to New Utah Brews: Utah Breweries Toast New 5% Beer Law

January 9, 2020 by Tim Haran Leave a Comment

It’s a new era for beer drinkers in Utah. Recent legislation now allows for beer containing up to 5 % alcohol by volume (ABV) to be sold at grocery and convenience stores in the state, as well as on draft at bars and restaurants. For 86 years—since Prohibition—Utah law had required that beer above 4% ABV (or 3.2% alcohol by weight) be sold in state-run liquor stores. That … [Read more...]

From Homebrew to Business Success Sage Dawson and Lynn Litchfield—owners of Toasted Barrel Brewery next door to The Soup Kitchen in SLC—say they got into the beer brewing biz because “We have an extreme passion for good beers and couldn't find the special sour beers we wanted here, so that made us take the leap.” Although they’re now proud owners of a brewery specializing in … [Read more...]

Some Local Beer Drinkers Upset with a Few Utah Craft Breweries

April 9, 2019 by Richard Markosian Leave a Comment

After last month’s beer issue we found that some local beer drinkers were upset that a few breweries were not into changing the allowable alcohol percentage in beer sold at grocery stores unless it was raised to eight or nine percent. And some, so upset by this, are calling for boycotting some local brands. I think these measures are unnecessary and far too severe. We are … [Read more...]

Silver Reef Brewing Brings Beer to St. George

March 31, 2019 by Tom Bennett Leave a Comment

Beer in St. George St. George is a town famous for its red rocks, senior games and its footlooseesque law against dancing. Nearby Colorado City, Arizona, opened its own Edge of The World Brewery and St. George couldn't help but follow suit. It's a dry town and it needs a little moisture. Silver Reef Brewing Co is named after Southern Utah's famous silver vein just north of … [Read more...]

Women Brewing Beer in Pink Boots: Pink Boots Society

March 19, 2019 by Maria Milligan Leave a Comment

Women's Brew Day: I celebrated International Women’s Day in March with some local female leaders taking a male-dominated industry by storm. I found them wearing pink work boots, making beer at Roosters’ B Street Brewery. By the time I arrived in the early afternoon, these brewers had been hard at work for over six hours. I got there just in time to see the secret ingredient … [Read more...]

Brews & Chews: 5 Can’t-Miss Restaurant Food and Beer Pairings

March 16, 2019 by Ted Scheffler Leave a Comment

For decades, wine snobs ruled the roost when it came to finicky food and beverage pairings. You know: Chardonnay ain’t good with steak; Cabernet is. That sort of thing. Well, with the emergence of America’s craft breweries and the idea that you can eat something besides burgers or beef jerky with your beer, focused food and beer pairings have also become “a … [Read more...]
