Founded in 1989 by partners Peter Cole and Jeff Polychronis, Squatters Craft Beers celebrated its 30th anniversary this past Sunday with a beer festival that took place in the parking lot adjacent to Squatters brewpub. It was a celebration of craft beers in general, not just of Squatters’ beers; and included a boatload of local breweries: Bohemian, Hopkins, Uinta, Red Rock, Hoppers, Level Crossing, Proper, Roosters, T.F. Brewing, Fisher, Mountain West Cider, RoHa, Kiitos, and SaltFire.
In attendance was The Salt Lake Tribune publisher and owner Paul Huntsman, who introduced award-winning political cartoonist Pat Bagley. Bagley was enlisted to paint a mural of “Lady Liberty” on the east wall of Squatters brewpub. He christened it by smashing a bottle of Squatters beer into the building. Upon being introduced at the Sunday celebration, Bagley said to Huntsman, “What are you doing here? Shouldn’t you be in church?”
