Comings and goings this week in Sugar House as we say goodbye to SugarHouse Barbecue Company and hello to a new Food Hall. Also Fleming’s Prime Steakhouse & Wine Bar is hosting a wine pairing dinner on August 16.

El Pino Club Wine Dinner at Fleming’s

Pinot Noir is a beloved varietal known for being expressive, fickle and complex while highlighting a sense of place. The folks at Fleming’s Prime Steakhouse & Wine Bar invites guests 21 and over to “explore how the terroir of each of our four pours impacts the Pinot’s profile at our 5-course wine dinner at your Salt Lake City Fleming’s on Friday, August 16, 2024 at 7:00 PM featuring El Pino Club. $70 5-course menu | $20 per recommended wine pairing per Guest.”

The first course for the prix-fixe dinner is Apricot-Glazed Salmon paired with El PIno Club, Funky Jory, Pinot Noir Dundee Hills Willamette Oregon, followed by a second course of Juniper-Grilled Lamb Lollipops paired with El Pino Club, Sea Floored, Pinot Noir Sta. Rita Hills California. Course number three will be Apple, Walnut & Blue Cheese Salad with El Pino Club, High Haven, Pinot Noir Anderson Valley California, and the fourth course is Filet Mignon & Pan-Roasted Mushrooms, with El PIno Club, The Cusp, Pinot Noir Russian River Valley. For dessert there will be Nectarine & Brie Galette served with coffee or tea.

SugarHouse BBQ to Close

I was saddened to hear of the impending permanent closure of Sugarhouse Barbecue Company. I remember enjoying the Carolina-style pulled pork there some 30 years ago when it first opened as Redbones. GM Jeff Berg was quoted as saying that COVID and ongoing construction in Sugarhouse contributed to the decision to close the restaurant in late August. Let’s hope all of the employees and owners land on their feet.

New Food Hall Coming to Sugar House

It’s been in the works for a while, but finally restaurateur Scott Evans (Pago, Finca, Emigration Cafe, Finca Pintxos Bar, Casot) has announced the opening – in a few months – of Sugar House Station, a “bar hall” with about 10 local bar and food concepts. The new food/drink hall will be situated in the Sugar House space that was formerly Kimi’s Chop & Oyster House.

The tentative list of participating business looks like a Who’s Who of the SLC food and drink scene and includes Casot (which presumably will move from its current location), Kimi’s, Proper Burger & Brewing, Canella’s (it will be great to see them back), Aristo’s (ditto), Birdhouse Chicken (the return of an Evans concept), Pizza Nono (yay!), Publik Coffee Roasters, Santo Tacos, and Bitters Amaro Bar.
