Where to Bar Hop Now

Must-try cocktails from three of Salt Lake’s great, new bars.

Sidecar cocktail from Tinwell Bar. Bartender Tristan told us this cocktail is a precursor to the margarita.

Tinwell Bar: is bringing class and cocktails to the Central 9th District, the newest up and coming area Downtown. The space has been completely renovated, with airy open seating areas, beautiful vaulted ceilings, and accented with a modern retro flair (not to mention an intact original vault from when the space first opened as a bank in 1945). Tinwell’s talented bartenders specialize in doing the classic cocktails up right, and you’ll also find some creative, well-balanced house cocktails on the menu. A great spot for an after-work happy hour, or a night out with friends!

Water Witch on a busy Friday night.

Water Witch: With folks in the cocktail community holding their breath, waiting for its opening, Water Witch delivered on every front! This small, colorful community bar is bringing another world of cocktail options to the booming Central 9th District, with some of the most well-known players in the Salt Lake City cocktail game behind the scenes. Want to see your cocktail enveloped in flames before consumption? Or feel 100% confident requesting “bartender’s choice” when ordering? Water Witch is the place for you. And, it’s definitely the place for me.

Airmail from Lake Effect made with Sugar House Distillery rum and dry Champagne

Lake Effect: is the newest craft cocktail joint to open its doors, and if you have been drinking craft cocktails around the town, you’re sure to see same familiar faces behind the expansive and absolutely gorgeous bar. The cocktail menu is just as extensive, with creative, well-thought-out drinks, and the space itself is one of the most beautiful renovations I’ve seen (Lake Effect is in the old space where late-night dance joint, The Hotel, used to be). Another thing that sets Lake Effect apart besides the cocktails and the vibe? The tasty food menu, consisting of everything from tacos and small bites, to salads and nachos. Dinner and a drink all in one!

  • The Battle Over Books in Utah: A Clash for the Future of Freedom

“Books don’t turn kids gay, but banning them just might turn them into adults who can’t think for themselves.”

With those words, Rebekah Cummings cut straight to the heart of Utah’s most heated controversy. As school districts across the state debate which books belong in children’s hands, the battle lines are drawn between parents who demand control over their children’s reading material and educators who fear that censorship will smother intellectual freedom.
