If you’re in the market for an affordable red wine to pour for the holidays (or any other time), I have a Bordeaux to recommend. Yes, I said Bordeaux.
“Bordeaux” and “affordable” aren’t uttered in the same sentence all that often. However, I found a really well-made, affordable Bordeaux from France that is solid, tasty, and priced here at a mere $12.11. Bordeaux for 12 bucks? Who knew?
The wine is Château Haut-Domingue Bordeaux 2016, a traditional Bordeaux blend of Merlot (50%), Cabernet Sauvignon (40%) and Cabernet Franc (10%). It pours into the glass a ruby red color with black fruit flavors of plum, blackcurrants and blackberries along with hints of strawberry, cherry, vanilla, and hints of tobacco.
This is a smooth wine that isn’t overly powerful, medium-bodied, thereby making it a good sipper for folks who perhaps aren’t so partial to red wine and tannins. Château Haut-Domingue Bordeaux has fine grained oak tannins, is very dry with good acidity – a fairly complex wine for such a low price. I would pair this Bordeaux with beef, chicken or turkey, and hard cheeses, but probably not game, which would overwhelm the wine. In my opinion, Château Haut-Domingue Bordeaux might just be the ultimate burger partner.
