Raphael – derived from Archangel St. Raphael – is known as “the patron saint of travelers and happy meetings” and if you are looking for an inexpensive, refreshing wine to drink during your summer travels or to share during a happy meeting, this one is for you: Poggio Anima Raphael Rosato (MSRP $15). Rosato is Italian Rosé and this unique Italian Rosato from Sicily is terrific, lightly chilled and sipped on a warm summer day.
Poggio Anima Rosato is an interesting blend of 85% Zibibbo and 15% Syrah from Sicily’s Castellamare and Salemi vineyards, respectively, grown primarily in brown clay and limestone soil. While Italian Rosato is often heavy-handed and dark in color, this Rosato is light and juicy, fermented in stainless steel – no oak.
Sunny Sicilian days and the rich, sandy slopes of Western Sicily are an ideal environment for making tasty Mediterranean wines like Poggio Anima Rosato. It is salmon pink in the glass, and on the palate has good acidity with peach, strawberry, raspberry and tangerine notes. It’s a floral wine that would be a good food partner for picnics, barbecues, seafood, sushi, and spicy fare ranging from Indian and Mexican to Thai cuisines. Pick up a bottle or two before Rosè season is just a distant memory.
