Adobe Road Winery Redline

One of the more interesting wine bottles to come across my desk this past year is called Redline, a red wine blend from California’s Adobe Road Winery.

One of the more interesting wine bottles to come across my desk this past year is called Redline, a red wine blend from California’s Adobe Road Winery. What first got my attention was the cool looking bottle with a silkscreened vintage sports car tachometer on the bottle. Why? I’ll explain.

Located in the heart of Sonoma County, Kevin Buckler and his wife Debra opened Adobe Road Winery in 2002. But, Kevin had already a career: as a professional race car driver and as a race team owner of a team called The Racers Group. As a winery owner, Buckler created The Racing Series of wines at Adobe Road Winery.

The Racing Series is a collection of four ultra-premium, California, red wine blends, all inspired by Buckler’s moments on the race track. The wines are called Apex, Redline, Shift and The 24. From the winery: “Back in 1995, Kevin entered his Porsche 911, built by The Racers Group, into the California Grand Prix and won his first professional race. Over the last 27 years, he and his team have built a legacy with more than 100 professional victories around the world including the 24 Hours of Le Mans and the Rolex 24 at Daytona (4 times).”

As an avid auto racing enthusiast myself (although I haven’t won any races…), I was easily drawn to The Racing Series of wines. Redline ($35) is rich, complex and delicious. It’s a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, Syrah, Petite Sirah, and Malbec that garnered 90 point scores from both Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate and Wine Spectator.

Maybe Redline is a bit more NASCAR than Le Mans. It’s a muscular blend of Rhone and Bordeaux grape varieties with dark fruit notes, some spiciness and a little smokiness, probably from French oak. Redline is a wine that will partner nicely with grilled steak, pizza, barbecue and pastas with rich red sauce. Race out and get some!
