Monday, August 28, 2022 is National Red Wine Day, a time when the flavors of fall are ushered in as grapes ripen and bolder wines replace some of our summer faves.

Over at Laurel Brasserie & Bar in The Grand America Hotel, certified sommelier and Laurel Beverage Director Mark Moulton invites you to visit the restaurant and enjoy some of his top red wine picks to “Drink Like a Sommelier” for Red Wine Day.

Here are some of Mark’s top red wine picks for Red Wine Day (and all year ‘round):

2013 Ridge Merlot – “Ridge is an all-time favorite of mine, they source the grapes from the Monte Bello Vineyard, which is world renown from the Santa Cruz Mountains AVA in Northern California.  The Merlot is structured yet has fine grain and integrated tannins with a textured mouthfeel and a long finish.”

2019 Shafer TD-9 – “This offering by Shafer Vineyards is exceptional, comprised of a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Malbec.  A beautiful expression of a red blend from Napa Valley, the wine is full-bodied with integrated and mouth coating tannins with black cherry and chocolate notes.  I especially appreciate the Malbec that adds depth and richness.”

2019 Musar Jeune – “The Musar Jeune Red is produced from organically farmed vineyards made from Cinsault, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon.  Chateau Musar is my favorite producer from Lebanon.  This wine has great minerality, dark fruit with a long lingering finish and is exceptional with a wide array of food.”

Guests can enjoy these red wines at Laurel on National Red Wine Day – or any other day, for that matter – perhaps paired with traditional French Steak Frites or the brand-new Spicy Lamb Sausage Wood-Fired Pizza on the just-opened patio.

Happy Red Wine Day, everyone!
