Festive Spring and Summer Brews from Epic

Epic Brewing has rolled out three festive Mexican-themed brews that would be perfect for Cinco de Mayo fiestas and for drinking all spring and summer.

This Friday, Epic’s new Utah Margarita comes out. According to the folks at Epic, “This gluten-free beer alternative is made with fresh squeezed lime and blue agave. Keep your eyes peeled for it to hit your local grocer this summer. Until then, swing by Epic to try the Utah Margarita for $9.99/4-pack. The Utah Margarita is crafted on the lighter side of things without sacrificing flavor. It weighs in at 5.0% abv and only 4 carbs.”

In addition Epic’s spring seasonal Horchata Cream Ale just hit the shelves. “This classic cream ale was brewed with rice & spicy cinnamon for a festive twist! Horchata Cream Ale is available now for $9.99/4-pack,” said Epic.

Epic added, “Los Locos Mexican-style Lager is tasty all year, but it hits differently in May. No need to take limes and a cutting board to the party this year, Los Locos is brewed with lime and sea salt so that you don’t have to add it. Los Locos is available at Epic and all state liquor stores year-round for $1.94/can. This easy-sipping beer has just a hint of malt sweetness, a dash of sea salt, and a refreshing splash of lime. It’s the perfect summer afternoon in a glass.”

  • Utah Craft Whiskey: How Barrels and Utah’s Climate Shape Flavor

Utah’s craft whiskey scene is shaped by more than grain, yeast, and time. The state’s dry climate plays an unusually powerful role in how spirits age, intensifying the relationship between whiskey and the barrels that hold it.

Low humidity accelerates evaporation during aging, often claiming 14–18 percent of a barrel’s contents as the “angel’s share.” Unlike more humid regions where alcohol evaporates faster, Utah barrels tend to lose more water, concentrating flavor and driving proof upward over time. That accelerated interaction pulls sugars, tannins, and spice from the wood more quickly, creating whiskeys that often taste older and more structured than their age statements suggest.

To understand how Utah distillers are deliberately harnessing climate, char, and finishing barrels to shape flavor, two producers at the forefront of that experimentation — Sugar House Distillery and Spirits of the Wasatch — shared how barrel choices influence everything from sweetness and spice to texture and proof.
