Vaudeville tradition of the weirdo act is making a comeback at Gonzo Rising
Salt Lake City – Local performing artists and self-proclaimed “weirdos” are gathering at the historic Beehive Social Club at 666 State Street on Wednesday, January 30th to celebrate the old vaudeville tradition of the Weirdo Act. Produced by Utah’s own Clusterphoque [to rhyme with “block”] Cabaret, Gonzo Rising All-Weirdo Revue traces the history of the weird and terrible acts historically used to clear the theaters. “We honor the tradition of such vaudeville greats as Le Pétomane the ‘fartiste,’ and our patron saint, Gonzo the Great,” said host and local burlesque emcee Scix Maddix.
Tickets are $10 at the door and the show is not age-restricted, but weird means weird, and parental guidance is suggested. Following the show there will be the Horribles Parade, a costumed pub crawl for adults, featuring the first outing of the bizarre Clusterphoque Marching Band!
Performances include the Puppets in the City adult puppet theatre; singing breakfast foods; kiddie pools full of creamed corn; apocalyptic clowns; transformative ballet; bovine invocations; Butoh, the Japanese art of torment and disfigurement; and much more.
Clusterphoque Cabaret is a collective of burlesque, variety and new-vaudeville performers dedicated to making the performing arts accessible to all. “Clusterphoque … are your starving artists, freaks, and weirdos from troops all over Utah who will entertain and delight your senses. We are entertainers of every size, color, gender, body type, and experience. We are tattoos and rhinestones, combat boots and heels, aggressions and delicacies.”
Gonzo Rising begins at 7:30. For more information contact Scix Maddix at scixual@gmail.com 385-419-8790 or see event page
