Jean-Baptiste Adam Gewürztraminer

If you’re looking for a wonderful wine to sip with someone special – perhaps for Valentine’s Day – Jean-Baptiste Adam Gewürztraminer 2016 is a slam-dunk.

Last weekend, I asked my wife, Faith, who was headed to the wine store, to pick up a bottle of Gewürztraminer. The idea was to sip the slightly sweet wine with hot Buffalo chicken wings during the Super Bowl. I figured she would come home with a $12 or so bottle of domestic Gewürztraminer. But, my wife is a bit of a wine snob (thankfully) and so, instead of something cheap, she came home with a bottle of Jean-Baptiste Adam Gewürztraminer 2016, from Alsace ($26.99). I’m grateful that my wife is so generous because this is an outstanding bottle of wine, at any price.

Gewürztraminer is a very aromatic, floral grape variety that grows best in cooler climates such as Germany and Alsace, or Oregon and Washington in this country. It ranges from fairly dry to semi-sweet to sweet. The sweetness and relatively low alcohol of Gewürztraminer makes it a good partner – opposites attract – to hot, spicy foods like Buffalo chicken wings.

I was a little concerned about the vintage of this wine – 2016 – since Gewürztraminer is a wine that doesn’t age too well and should normally be consumed in the first one to three years. However, properly chilled – refrigerator temperature for Gewürztraminer – the wine was wonderful.

Jean-Baptiste Adam Gewürztraminer 2016 is a natural, biodynamic wine that is a fruit explosion of aromas and flavors. It’s brimming with pretty floral aromas and on the palate there’s a riot of fruit flavors ranging from lychee and pineapple to peach and apricot, with additional hints of honey and ginger. It’s not cheap, but if you’re looking for a wonderful wine to sip with someone special – perhaps for Valentine’s Day – Jean-Baptiste Adam Gewürztraminer 2016 is a slam-dunk.
