My son, Hank, and college friends of his were visiting us last weekend and my wife, Faith, picked up an array of interesting beers for a weekend cookout. One that got my attention – in part because it’s one of the strangest sounding beers I’ve ever come across – was Epic Brewing Co. Sour Brainless On Guava & Habanero, Cellar Reserve. What in the world?, I thought.
It’s not an inexpensive beer, I’ll tell you that: $9.99 for 12.7 ounces. But hey, the wax seal must be expensive, right?
Well, this is a very unusual brew. It’s highly carbonated – part of the Epic “Brainless” series of beers, but with pretty powerful guava flavors and an aftertaste with subtle hints of habanero pepper (I’d have liked a little more pepper, please). It’s more of a tart ale than a sour one, in my opinion, but very quaffable. The brew is aged in oak barrels with pink guava and habanero peppers and clocks in at 6.6% ABV.
If you like guava, you’re gonna love Sour Brainless on Guava & Habanero.
