August 5: Cool Cat Adoption Event from No-Kill Utah. From Noon to 7:00pm at The Falls at Trolley Square, 600 S 700 E. Admission to the event is free. All cats and kittens are spayed/neutered, vaccinated and micro-chipped and can be adopted for $25.

 

August 10-13: 2016 Weber County Fair – “Hop To It” Opening day is dollar day, bring a canned food donation and admission is $1. Held at the Golden Spike Event Center, 1000 N 1200 W, Ogden. Hours are 11am to 11pm. Visit http://www.webercountyfair.org/home for more information.

 

August 13: Alpine Days 5K. The race starts at 7 am with check-in between 6 and 6:45am. The starting point is 600 E 100 N, (Just north of Creekside Park). For more information and other Alpine Days events visit http://www.alpinedays.com/#!blank-7/c1qkn

 

August 18: MoabBandAid. The Grand County High School Marching Band will perform live at Moab’s Farmers market from 5pm to 7pm for their annual fundraiser. The event is free to attend and will also feature the Moab Community Dance Band and The Fiery Furnace. Donations accepted. Visit moabmusicfest.org for more information.

 

August 20: Rube Goldberg Machine at the Leonardo at Library Square. Help Build a larger-than-life chain reaction at 11am at the Leonardo, 209 E 500 S. Admission is $12.95 for adults, $9.95 for students and $8.95 for children (3-12) and seniors (65+). August 20: Salt Lake City Library Olympics. Compete in a javelin throw, balloon tennis, broom hockey and other games at the Anderson-Foothill Branch. It will be held from 10am to 6pm and all ages are welcome. This event is part of the Anderson-Foothill Olympic Summer Party.  

 

August 25: National Park Film Festival. Celebrate the National Park’s 100th Anniversary with films at the Arches Visitor Center. Doors open at 6:30pm. Visit  nps.gov/arch/planyourvisit/calendar.htm for more information.

  • When Main Street Burned: The Aftermath of the Salt Lake City Fire That Hit Downtown Bars

    Fire doesn’t respect zoning, property lines, or even the most popular block on Main Street. On the evening of Monday, August 11, 2025, a blaze that began around 8:40 p.m. on Main Street. It moved quickly through a row of aging, interconnected buildings that had become the heart and soul of Salt Lake City’s fledgling bar district. By the time firefighters brought it under control, multiple businesses were damaged, dozens of workers were displaced, and one of the city’s most active stretches went dark.

    The fire started at London Bell and spread into neighboring structures, severely damaging Whiskey Street. White Horse never caught fire, but smoke, water, and a partial roof collapse caused extensive interior damage, forcing a full rebuild. Other nearby businesses were affected as well, including some that had helped turn this part of Main Street into one of its most active and economically stable stretches.

    Utah leaders announced the state has successfully won the bid to acquire key assets of the defunct US Magnesium facility on the Great Salt Lake, including its associated water rights and property.
