What To Do In January

It might be cold outside, but there is still plenty to do in January. Along with ice skating and sleigh rides there are activities at the UMOCA and the Salt Lake County Library. Not to mention a Germanfest in Ogden and the Winterlude in Moab.

Ice Skating

Outdoor ice skating in and around Salt Lake. Millcreek Common Skate Loop is open 7 days a week and rentals are available. The Gallivan Center Is open 7 days a week with rentals and concessions. Ice Ribbon at J. Lynne Crane Park in Herriman is open daily with rentals. Bountiful Ice Ribbon is open daily and also features rentals. 

January through February 11

Sleigh rides through a herd of elk. This activity is held at Hardware Ranch, 15 miles east of Hyrum, by Haviland’s Old West Adventures and sponsored by the Division of Wildlife Resources. Each ride is around 40 minutes between the hours of 10am and 4:30pm. The elk herd is between 600 to 650, and riders should get a close look. Reservations can be made by calling Haviland’s Old West Adventures at 435-744-3229. 

January 13

Family Art Saturday. Every second Saturday of the month, the Utah Museum of Contemporary Art hosts events for children aged 5-12 and their adults to explore the Art Center exhibitions and participate in hands-on art-making activities. This is a free event. The Museum is located at 20 S West Temple.  

January 19

Teen Winter Ball sponsored by Salt Lake County Library. This event is for high school-aged teens with an Alice in Wonderland theme. Activities include dancing, playing royal flamingo croquet, and general nonsense and wonderment. Formal tea party attire is encouraged, but not mandatory. Pre Registration is available on the Salt Lake County Library website. 

January 19-20

Sneddon Hof Germanfest 2024 at the Ogden Eccles Conference Center on 2415 Washington Boulevard. Featuring authentic food, music, and traditional dances with continuous entertainment. Prices range from $5 for children 3-12, $8 for general admission, with discounts for military, seniors, and students. Hours are Friday and Saturday from 11am to 9pm. 

January 26

Moab Music Festival: Winterlude with the Allson Shearer Quartet at the Hoodoo. This New York City-based quartet had a sold-out concert last year. The performance is at 7pm with “pay-what-you-wish” tickets $30-$50. Tickets available here.

January 27

Bigfoot Snowshoe Festival. This annual event, in its 15th year, is held at Midway, Utah with 5K and 10K loop courses on the groomed golf course and a 5K single track mountain loop. They also feature a 50K, Marathon, 25K and 15K. All races start and finish at the Wasatch Mountain Visitors’ Center.
