The Wasatch Academy Tigers Varsity basketball team has been invited to compete in the Dick’s Sporting Goods High School National Tournament, the most prestigious high school basketball tournament in the United States. The Wasatch Academy Tigers are among the eight top-ranked teams in the country who have been invited to compete for the national title, with the championship game being held at Madison Square Garden.
Only eight elect teams have been asked to play in the 3-day tournament, and it is a first-ever for a Utah high school team. Wasatch Academy, from Mount Pleasant, Utah, has previously played three of the other invited schools, beating #12, La Lumiere of Indiana, while suffering losses to #2, Montverde Academy of Florida, and #6, Findlay Prep of Nevada.
The Wasatch Academy Tigers have compiled a 29-3 record this season, 24-2 on the road, with eight consecutive wins. The Tigers broke into the USA TODAY’s Super 25 rankings of the best high school basketball teams in the country at #21, and have advanced to #19, another first for Wasatch Academy.
The Tigers players are just as impressive academically as they are on the court, with three of the players also being on the Wasatch Academy chess team, which just won the Utah State Championship.
Wasatch Academy will face #3, Oak Hill Academy from Virginia, at 2pm (EDT) on March 31 during the quarterfinals. The game will be aired live on ESPNU. Winners of Day 1 games wil lproceed to the semifinals the following day, aired on ESPN2. The championship game, played Saturday, April 2 at renowned Madison Square Garden, will air on ESPN at noon (EDT).
