JUAN DIEGO CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL SELECTED FOR NATIONAL AWARD BY THE U.S. SECRETARY OF EDUCATION

First Utah high school since 1997 to be recognized with the National Blue Ribbon Award
for excellence in education.

SALT LAKE CITY (September 26, 2019) — U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos announced today that Juan Diego Catholic High School in Draper, Utah, will be receiving the National Blue Ribbon Award at the annual ceremony to be held Thursday, November 14 through Friday, November 15, 2019, at the Gaylord National Resort and Conference Center in National Harbor, Maryland.

Juan Diego Catholic High School is being honored as an “Exemplary High Performing” school with student achievement in English and mathematics placing it among the highest in the country (top 15%); as well as ranking among Utah’s top high school graduation rates. This honor is the first for a Utah high school since 1997 when Judge Memorial Catholic High School received the award.

The National Blue Ribbon Schools Program

The National Blue Ribbon Schools Program, an important part of the U.S. Department of Education, recognizes outstanding public and non-public schools that exemplify school excellence, turnaround stories, and proficiency in closing subgroup achievement gaps.

“Receiving this award is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our staff and students and the commitment of parents and the community to the education of our children,” said Dr. Galey Colosimo, principal of Juan Diego Catholic High School. “Any recognition like this is a community effort and demonstrates the values we place on having our students be successful beyond the classroom.”

Juan Diego Catholic Schools prepare students for college and beyond. One of the institution’s philosophies is to provide top-notch education to families of all races, creeds, and financial backgrounds, preparing them academically, spiritually, and emotionally.

U.S. Secretary DeVos recognized 362 schools across the country as National Blue Ribbon Schools for 2019. “We recognize and honor your important work in preparing students for successful careers and meaningful lives,” said U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos in a video message to the honorees. “As a National Blue Ribbon School, your school demonstrates what is possible when committed educators hold all students and staff to high standards and create vibrant, innovative cultures of teaching and learning.”
