Birds perched on the spouts of teapots, figures trapped in canisters trying to push their way out; a vase with multiple faces. Where can you find these eclectic objects in Salt Lake? At Dara Modern, along with place settings, silverware, furniture and kitchen devices.

When Dustin Matinkah, owner of Dara Modern, bought a home in 2012, he had difficulty finding local sources to realize his design style – clean, simple, modern. A light bulb went on and he knew there was a market that needed to be filled. He decided to open a shop focusing on modern designs.

Dustin grew up with an architect mother and a father who was a lighting designer. Although he studied business management and marketing, he always loved design. Between designing his own home and doing remodel work for his mother, he realized this was his calling. He started Dara Modern to offer design services and a place for people to purchase home furnishings. Outgrowing his current Broadway location, he is contemplating a move to a 9th & 9th location where he could showcase more furniture.

As Dustin explains, “Modern design is for people who like an uncluttered lifestyle.” In a kitchen remodel he is working on, he describes it as “really clean—even the cabinets have no hardware. There are no high cabinets, leaving a more open feel and room for art.”

What sets Dustin apart is that he carries unique products not found at other Salt Lake stores, including high-end brands such as Blu Dot, Gus Modern, US-based Jonathan Adler, Scandinavian pieces from Littala, and Alessi—an Italian brand. Dustin says of Alessi, “They are known for their everyday household goods designed in fun and functional ways.”

He recently started a wedding registry so that a couple can request items that will be signature showpieces for their new residence. He is also in the process of working on a modern kitchen redesign.

His advice to those thinking of a remodel? “Figure out what is important in that room and build around it, whether your goal is comfort or something more formal. Design should be functional. It is good to come home and instantly be happy because your space is amazing.”

Dara Modern is located at 213 E Broadway. 801-891-9632.
