Whether it’s bourbon, beer, or burgers that you crave, there’s nothing better than hitting the road in pursuit of the ideal dive bar experience. I’m talking about a place where the beer’s always cold, the company’s always colorful, and the bar tab is surprisingly affordable.

If you’re not sure where to start, I’ve already done a mini dive bar road trip across the Wasatch Front. I look for places that aren’t too big, offer tasty basic fare, and have the kind of atmosphere you just want to hang out in. Here are my favorites, along with recommendations about how to best enjoy your time at each one.

City Club, Ogden: 264 25th Street

What Makes Them Special
If you’re a Beatles fan, you’ll love the impressive collection of memorabilia that adorns the walls of this cozy spot on Ogden’s Historic 25th Street. When you walk in the door (and climb up the stairs) you’re instantly greeted like a regular.

Why Locals Love them
These are the cheapest drinks in Utah—and the City Club mixes them appropriately. The whiskey ginger is my favorite (it’s often on special for $2.50) and you get a shot of whiskey with a splash of ginger, so your drink tastes like a drink.

What You Have to Try
The wings are a must. The sauce is spicy and sweet, and the steaming pile they serve is plenty for a crowd. If wings aren’t your thing, then go for one of their Beatle Burgers. My favorite is the For You Blue—it comes with bacon and is dripping with bleu cheese dressing.

Johnny’s on Second, Downtown SLC 165 E 200 South

What Makes Them Special
When we take our geriatric pup (Lucas) for a walk in the city, we always stop at Johnny’s to wet our whistles. We can sit in the outside patio area and enjoy a beer while Lucas enjoys lots of pets and admiration from friendly folks enjoying the weather or a smoke.

Why Locals Love Them
Johnny’s is a place full of loyal regulars who are truly a family. And even though we don’t go often enough to be “in,” we’re still treated as if we were. The pool tables are always busy and the patio is one of the best places in the city for people-watching.

What You Have to Try
Johnny’s is the “Home of the $4 Shot and Beer,” so that’s the right place to start. ‘Nuff said.

O’Shucks, Park City 427 Main Street

What Makes Them Special
Peanuts on the floor and schooners of beer make O’Shucks stand out from the other bars on Park City’s Main Street. O’Shucks also has two other locations (Jeremy Ranch and downtown SLC), but the original is my favorite.

Why Locals Love Them
O’Shucks is a little haven from the more stuffy and overpriced fare on Main Street. In the summer, the patio is bustling with locals, dogs, and lively conversation. In the winter, the dim bar is the perfect escape from frigid temps and overdressed out-of-state visitors.

What You Have to Try
Tuesday’s locals’ special is $3 schooners of beer and $3 cheeseburgers. For an extra two bucks you can make your burger a double. If you’re looking for a reason to head up the canyon, then O’Shucks’ Tuesday special should be the only excuse you need. §
