Last week in Utah Bites I offered a roundup of excellent restaurant choices for dine-in and takeout on Thanksgiving. Since then, a few more options have rolled in. So, I thought I’d share them with you in case you’re still on the fence about what to do for your Thanksgiving meal. I got a note from owner Scott Evans with information about Thanksgiving meal kits being offered … [Read more...]
THANKFUL FOR OUR RESTAURANTS — Where to Dine-In or Score Great Takeout for Thanksgiving Day
Since many family members and friends won’t be traveling to join in-home Thanksgiving feasts this year, a good option might be to just let the pros do the cooking. A number of great local restaurants will be open for dine-in service on Thanksgiving 2020, and some are also offering meals to take home. Here are some excellent choices. In Park City, Bill White’s Windy Ridge … [Read more...]
TALES OF TAKEOUT: HIT PARADE – A Dozen Delicious Restaurant Takeout Dishes
As COVID-19 cases spike and the virus is at an all-time peak in this country and others, some of us are wary of dining in restaurants. Thankfully, most restaurants have rolled with the punches and even many fine dining establishments now offer takeout meals and curbside pickup and/or delivery. My wife and I have been indulging in a lot of takeout cuisine during the past nine … [Read more...]
Ogden’s New Brews – First Look at Ogden River Brewery
Pat Winslow is an affable guy who, to say the least, has had a varied and interesting life. Winslow, who hails originally from Cheyenne, Wyoming, had a career “riding the rails” as a conductor for the Union Pacific Railroad, worked for Christian churches, spent some time as a clown, and had a singing telegram business, which is where he met his lovely wife, Sara, during a job … [Read more...]
MADE IN-HOUSE – A Leisurely Lunch at From Scratch Restaurant
How time flies. It seems like only yesterday that I wrote a lengthy review of a then new, upstart eatery in downtown SLC called From Scratch. But in fact, that was in early 2014. Since then, the restaurant has changed hands and is no longer owned by David Brodsky. I was told at From Scratch that it was now operated by the Wasatch Venture Group, which also runs Corner Bakery … [Read more...]
YOU SAY “TAPAS” I SAY “IZAKAYA” – A Visit to Ozora Izakaya Japanese Bar & Tapas
Following on the ramen trend of recent years, I’ve been noticing the word izakaya popping up a lot lately in culinary circles and restaurants. The term izakaya in Japan is typically used to describe a type of bar or small restaurant where inexpensive dishes and snacks are served, much like tapas in Spain. Most izakayas are open late at night and the focus is on drinks more than … [Read more...]
Burger Battle – How Does Shake Shack Shake Out vs. a Local?
Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past few months, you’re likely aware that Shake Shack has come to Utah. It would be hard to miss Utah’s press and foodies going gaga over the opening of our first Shake Shack at The School Yard in Sandy or the recent opening of a second Utah location at Fashion Place. So this week I decided to find out what all the fuss is about. … [Read more...]
Surf & Turf Fried Rice
Here’s the deal: My wife really likes ham fried rice. I prefer shrimp. The solution: Surf & Turf Fried Rice using both shrimp and ham! It’s surprisingly good - the best of both worlds. Ingredients: Cooked long-grain white rice or jasmine rice — 1 1/2 cups uncooked. I usually cook the rice in the afternoon and let it dry a bit before using it for dinner. Leftover rice … [Read more...]
TALES OF TAKEOUT – Takeout Tryout #10: Nikko
This week I’m continuing my periodic COVID-19 series: Tales of Takeout, wherein I visit restaurants to scout out their takeout cuisine and options. Some eateries are better suited to takeout than others. Frankly, I was surprised that a sushi restaurant - Nikko Sushi & Ramen in Kaysville - is nailing the takeout experience. You might think that fresh sushi wouldn’t travel … [Read more...]
STAYING POWERS – Checking in on Venerable Bambara Restaurant
It’s hard for me to believe that I first wrote about Bambara restaurant when it opened, some 21 years ago now. Time flies. Bambara opened its doors simultaneously with the Kimpton Hotel Monaco, in which it is housed. The Hotel Monaco is, in my opinion, Utah’s finest boutique hotel. It’s where many famous rock bands and performers stay when, in more normal times, they’re playing … [Read more...]
