Haunted Haven, The Coop and Bestselling Food Writer in Salt Lake

October 28, 2022 by Ted Scheffler Leave a Comment

Haunted Haven Returns to Log Haven Did you know that Log Haven restaurant in Millcreek Canyon is considered, by some, to be haunted? For example, General Manager Ian Campbell – who’s about as un-superstitious a person as I know – was “once walking past a freezer at Log Haven and out of the corner of his eye he saw a man with black and white clothing similar to that of a chef. … [Read more...]

Roasted Cardamom Chicken

October 7, 2022 by Ted Scheffler Leave a Comment

I love the taste of cardamom, which is very complex with citrus, herbal, floral and spicy notes. It’s delicious in an easy-to-prepare dish like this one: roasted chicken with a cardamom coating. Ingredients: 2 bone-in chicken leg & thigh quarters or 4 chicken leg or thigh pieces 1 Tbsp vegetable or canola oil Ground cardamom Salt ¼ tsp. … [Read more...]

Simple Roasted Chicken

May 19, 2022 by Ted Scheffler Leave a Comment

One thing that really separates good cooks from not-so-good, is the ability to roast a chicken properly. You’d be surprised how many professional chefs and cooks can’t. It’s deceptively easy, but cooking the meat - especially the breast - so it’s tender and juicy while also creating a beautiful, crispy skin requires attention to detail and technique.  This is one of my … [Read more...]

35 Years of Wasatch Beers, Haunted Haven, Hearth & Hill Expanding to SLC

October 15, 2021 by Ted Scheffler Leave a Comment

Wasatch Brewery Celebrates 35th Anniversary It’s hard to believe that it has been 35 years since founder Greg Schirf opened Wasatch Brewery in Park City. Yep, in 1986 Greg opened the doors to Wasatch Brewery, the first post-prohibition brewery to open in Utah, with the promise to “drink our share and sell the rest.” Promise kept.  In addition to irreverent marketing and … [Read more...]

A SUPERB SPOT TO DINE ABOUT: An Enchanted Evening at Ghidotti’s

October 8, 2021 by Ted Scheffler Leave a Comment

I am already on record as saying that Bill White - the Park City owner of eight successful restaurants - is the smartest, most creative, and hardest working restaurateur I’ve ever personally met. And that includes the likes of Danny Meyer, Mario Batali, Todd English, Thomas Keller, Jean-Georges Vongerichten and other high profile restaurateurs with multiple eateries. Even … [Read more...]

One Pot Roasted Chicken

July 16, 2020 by Ted Scheffler Leave a Comment

This method of oven roasting a whole chicken in a well-sealed pot makes for an incredibly juicy, tender chicken with natural pan jus. It’s one of my favorite recipes.  Ingredients: 1 roasting chicken — 3 1/2 to 4 1/2 pounds 1/2 tsp cracked black pepper 2 tsp kosher salt 1 1/2 Tbsp. olive oil 1 celery stalk, roughly chopped 1 small carrot, roughly chopped … [Read more...]

X-RATED—True Farm to Table Fare at Table X

November 1, 2019 by Ted Scheffler Leave a Comment

I recently had the pleasure of co-hosting the Salt Lake City episode of a terrific TV series that showcases American restaurants, called Tasting America. Among the restaurants that Tasting America host Gary Takle and I visited was Table X, a unique SLC eatery that I’ve been rooting for ever since it opened. The dining room is sleek and modern, yet retains the rustic … [Read more...]
