Ask any sommelier and they’ll probably tell you that the most food-friendly wine to drink is Riesling. I know what you’re thinking: “Riesling? Isn’t that a sweet wine?”
Well, Riesling can be sweet. There are a range of Riesling wines running the gamut from teeth-aching sweet to pucker-the-mouth bone dry. The best food-friendly Riesling wines are of the dry, acidic type.
That’s the idea behind Kung Fu Girl Riesling ($14.99) from Charles Smith Wines in Washington State. Smith is the unconventional winemaker behind this pleasantly dry Riesling. The story behind the wine goes like this: “One night, Charles was eating Chinese takeout and watching a fight scene in a notorious martial arts film when he had an idea: a killer white wine made to be paired with Asian food. Just like that, Kung Fu Girl was born. It’s been kicking ass and taking names ever since.”
The great thing about dry Riesling wines is that they are so versatile. They love a wide range of food and partner nicely with everything from sushi and Mexican fare to roasted chicken and Indian food. Kung Fu Girl Riesling is no exception. I’d love this wine equally with street tacos or hot ramen.
The wine has lively acidity that makes it particularly food-friendly, a very aromatic wine with white peach, apricot, honeysuckle, lychee, lime and pear flavors. Kung Fu Girl is a fun, racy wine that is a steal for the price. Get some in you!
