The next generation of professionals throughout Utah have come to appreciate the importance of a formal education. To put this observation into perspective, attendance rates at all Utah universities increased by 4.32% in 2023 alone. While this is great news for those who are keen to enjoy lucrative future careers, we also need to remember that stress can certainly take its toll.

What are some of the ways in which students can make the most out of a university-level education while tackling formidable scholastic challenges? Let’s take a look at a few unique approaches, and the benefits of each.

Preparing Well in Advance

Readers may be surprised to learn that the most well-adapted college students actually prepare for their journey well before being physically accepted into a university. This is why it is important to take full advantage of any outreach programs that may be available. One ideal example can be seen in the PATH system championed by the University of Utah.

PATH is an acronym for “Promoting Access to High Schoolers”, and this program is primarily concerned with preparing students for what university life entails. What is unique about PATH is that it is open to all students from the ninth grade onwards. Organizers believe that becoming acclimated to what is expected of them will enable students to adapt over time; leading to a smoother transition once they eventually migrate to college.

Open Channels of Communication

Some students are more open to discussing their problems when compared to others. Although this often boils down to individual personality traits, the problem here is that silence is far from golden. Those who feel that there is no one to turn to can easily begin to isolate themselves from the student body, their friends, and even family members.

One of the most effective ways to avoid such situations is to foster—and consistently maintain—open channels of communication once university life is in full swing. Students must know that they have a support system to rely on when things get tough. Not only does this allow them to “blow off steam” from time to time, but assertive communication skills are also essential later in life.

Here are some relevant organizations that students can turn to in times of need:

  • The University Counseling Center – offering general support to all students
  • The Center for Campus Wellness – providing personal coaching services, substance abuse advice, and general guidance to promote mental health

A Dose of Practicality

Utah students are not only concerned with adapting to what many will classify as an entirely new environment. They are also likely to be burdened with everyday tasks that could just as easily become overwhelming. In this case, it is better to embrace innovation when possible. This is when the power of the Internet becomes clear.

For example, let’s imagine that a student is required to submit a physical research paper before the end of the semester. He or she can always look for ways to streamline the finishing touches. These are all excellent ways to leave a lasting impression while saving a significant amount of time; both very real concerns for any student who may already be governed by a tight schedule.

  • Poor sleeping habits
  • The inability to remain focused
  • Sensations of anxiety, or constantly feeling “on edge”
  • The inability to enjoy activities that were previously fulfilling

Students capable of identifying these warning signs at an early stage will be more likely to take the appropriate actions, and avoid their long-term effects.Whether attending a state-run university, or planning an education abroad, Utah students who can cope with the stressors of college will inevitably succeed later in life.
