I had the pleasure this last weekend of attending the launch party for Deer Valley Pilsner, brewed by the talented team at Proper Brewing Co. The party was held at Deer Valley Resort’s 21-and-over bar, the Sticky Wicket, which means there was also great food to accompany Proper Brewing’s perfect pilsner.
Speaking to Proper co-owner Andrew Tendick and one of Proper’s brewers, I learned that the Deer Valley Pilsner is an attempt (a successful one, if you ask me) at brewing a pilsner that is a mashup of European – especially German – style pils and an American one. American grains are used in conjunction with German and American-style hops to create a lovely, very drinkable pilsner that was outstanding by itself but even better alongside a heavenly ham and cheese sandwich at Sticky Wicket, made with Kurobuta ham, Swiss and Dubliner cheeses, and cornichon relish on toasted artisanal sourdough.
The brew crew at Proper Brewing Co. tried out more than a dozen different recipes for the Deer Valley Pilsner before developing the one that makes for a perfect apres ski beer that can pair with a wide range of foods. It’s clean and crisp and can be found at Deer Valley food and beverage outlets, as well as at Proper Brewing Co.
