Refreshing, Crisp Italian Wine: 2018 Zenato Lugana di San Benedetto

I’ve been on a bit of an Italian wine kick lately. That’s partly because I keep coming across wonderful wine values from Italy, like this one: 2018 Zenato Lugana di San Benedetto, priced at a mere $16.99 here in Utah.

I’ve been on a bit of an Italian wine kick lately. That’s partly because I keep coming across wonderful wine values from Italy, like this one: 2018 Zenato Lugana di San Benedetto, priced at a mere $16.99 here in Utah.

Zenato Lugana is made from 100% Trebbiano grapes – one of the most widely planted wine grape varietals in the world. The grapes were harvested from Zenato’s San Benedetto parcel on the south shore of Lake Garda in Veneto. And, since the wine is fermented in stainless steel tanks, there’s no cloying or heavy oak to clutter things up. This is a refreshing, crisp, acidic wine which makes it a good partner for all sorts of cuisines.

The wine – pale lemon-green in the glass – shows citrus, green apple and yellow peach flavors with subtle hints of banana. The winemaker suggests pairing Zenato Lugana with carbonara, among other dishes. Pasta carbonara is a notoriously tricky dish to pair wine with, but I thought the Lugana was a very good partner. I’d also drink it with grilled fish or chicken dishes.
