Avenues Bistro: New Owners; Timeless Appeal

September 28, 2018 by Ted Scheffler Leave a Comment

A Neighborhood Joint I’ve been a fan and follower of Chef Michael Richey’s culinary talents since back when he cooked up at Solitude Mountain Resort. I enthusiastically reviewed his Fireside on Regent restaurant when it opened last year and still think it’s one of the best places to dine in downtown SLC. For many years I’ve also thought that Avenues Bistro on Third - … [Read more...]

Crawfish & Andouille Fettuccine

September 28, 2018 by Ted Scheffler Leave a Comment

This recipe is a Cajun-Creole slant on popular fettuccine Alfredo, with the creaminess of a cheesy Alfredo sauce combined with andouille sausage and crawfish from Louisiana. Based on an original recipe from Louisiana Chef John Folse, this is a very rich and delicious dish that your family will love. Ingredients: 12 ounces fettuccine, cooked al dente 1 pound crawfish … [Read more...]

Adami Dei Casel Prosecco

September 28, 2018 by Ted Scheffler Leave a Comment

In my Utah Bites review this week of Avenues Bistro on Third, I mentioned a particularly good food and wine match that my wife and I enjoyed there. It was an order of gougères - French-style puff pastries made with Gruyere - and a bright, crisp sparkling wine from the restaurant’s wine list: Adami Dei Casel Extra Dry Valdobbiadene DOCG Prosecco Superiore ($20.99). This … [Read more...]

Wildland Firefighters in Spanish Fork Canyon

September 27, 2018 by Richard Markosian Leave a Comment

Heading to Moab in mid-August, we found that Spanish Fork Canyon was closed to motor vehicles from August 12th to August 15th. A massive forest fire in Coal Hollow was blazing and spreading to neighboring canyons. As of this writing, it has devoured 26,380 acres of cedar and pine forest. There are currently five active wildfires in Utah, making this the most destructive fire … [Read more...]

Salt Lake’s Big Time Karaoke Scene

September 26, 2018 by Nick Kuzmack Leave a Comment

Karaoke is a unique medium that brings people from all walks of life together. From professionals, to amateurs, to friends just out for a laugh, it is a platform for individuals or groups to get on a stage and sing their favorite tunes—with or without the assistance of libations. “To me it’s the coming together of cultures. We have people of all ages and backgrounds. It’s … [Read more...]

A Clear Identity Crisis: Clearfield Master Plan Promotes New Business and Services with Vision 2020

September 25, 2018 by Maria Milligan Leave a Comment

Clearfield City has seen more than its fair share of negative press. Searching for Clearfield on Utah’s major news sites yields stories of crime, the city buying a trailer park out from under residents, and city officials demanding that a woman remove an artistic statement (a VW bug in a tree) from her own property. While there is a positive side to each of these … [Read more...]

Tupelo Park City: Global Flavors, Southern Accent

September 25, 2018 by Darby Doyle Leave a Comment

Whether hearing the word “tupelo” evokes a love song by Van Morrison, or sensory memories of delicate tupelo tree blossom honey indigenous to the Southeast US, the term is both a cultural and culinary touchstone. As an Atlanta native who has traveled the world honing his culinary talents, tupelo Park City chef/owner Matt Harris hits all the right notes melding exacting … [Read more...]

Red Curry Tofu

September 21, 2018 by Ted Scheffler Leave a Comment

Here is a vibrant tasting vegetarian dish with very robust flavors. Although there are a fair number of ingredients, don’t let that deter you. It’s actually a pretty simple recipe in terms of technique and time. Once you have everything prepped, the cooking is pretty rapid. My version is an adaptation of a recipe that first appeared in the New York Times. Ingredients: 14 … [Read more...]

OTC Townie Rosé 2017

September 21, 2018 by Ted Scheffler Leave a Comment

Old Town Cellars, known as “the official wine of après,” is a winery located at the bottom of Main Street in Park City. The mission at Old Town Cellars (OTC) is to create approachable wines and to serve and sell them in a laid-back and inviting atmosphere. No wine snobbery allowed. Says OTC co-founder Stephen MacKay, “Starting a winery has been stressful enough. Let’s not make … [Read more...]

Killer Kitchen: A Modern Take on Lebanese Cooking

September 21, 2018 by Ted Scheffler Leave a Comment

In Arabic, “laziz” means enjoyable, tasty and lighthearted. With that in mind, owners Derek Kitchen and Moudi Sbeity could not have picked a more appropriate name for their restaurant: Laziz Kitchen. The food is tasty, indeed. The vibe at Laziz is nothing if not enjoyable, and both the food and ambiance is lighthearted, never heavy-handed. This place just oozes friendliness. … [Read more...]
