The Art of Tombstone Engraving

October 29, 2015 by Al Sacharov 1 Comment

Pictures fade. Memories vanish. Stone stays. A person's tombstone will far outlast their brief time on earth.  Names, dates, thoughts - "They will last hundreds of years, easy," says Justin Daniels of Salt Lake Monument. Located across from Salt Lake City Cemetery, the shop has been carving tombstones since 1890. Justin has been a stone artisan for 20 years. … [Read more...]

University of Utah Body Donor Program

October 28, 2015 by Al Sacharov Leave a Comment

The dead help teach the living through the University of Utah Body Donor Program.   Last year, over 200 individuals chose to donate their bodies to science. Kerry Peterson, who directs the program, said the reason for doing so is unique for each individual, but the common thread is altruism. “We have had a person as young as 13 and as old as 108 donate their bodies.  People … [Read more...]

Babs In The City

October 27, 2015 by Babs De Lay 1 Comment

Salt Lake County Health Department’s new brochure bespeaks fecal matter. That’s because it is about the ‘Proper Clean-Up of Human Waste and Drug Paraphernalia’. If you haven’t noticed, there’s a lot of poop on the ground these days, particularly downtown and in our parks. I’m not talking the usual dog doo found on the random sidewalk or lawn, but human dung dropped at the back … [Read more...]

Twist – Salt Lake’s New Bar and Bistro

October 26, 2015 by Paige Wiren Leave a Comment

“We serve high-end cocktails, but we’re not an upscale bar. We have cheap drinks, but we’re not a dive bar. We have sports on the TV, but we’re not a sports bar; and we have music, but we’re not a club.” This is how Brett Kirk describes Twist, the most recent addition to downtown Salt Lake’s bar and bistro scene. Brett has partnered with co-owners Phil Palmer and … [Read more...]

Police Force and Bedside Manners

October 22, 2015 by Richard Markosian Leave a Comment

Utah State Capitol— The phrase of the day was "bedside manners". Senator Todd Weiler asks POST (Police Officer Standards and Training)-- "How do you teach officers to have good bedside manners?" The POST Director didn't believe this phrase appropriate for their type of training. But he talked about their training in "deescalation techniques." and hours of scenarios officers … [Read more...]

October 22, 2015 by Amanda Rock Leave a Comment

Four generations of Kohler family dairy farmers have called the lush green Heber Valley home since 1929. Surrounded by the Wasatch Back mountains and the Provo River, 200 Holstein cows inhabit their Canyon View Farm. This family operation is centered on the well-being of their beloved cows. “We work hard to make sure they are well taken care of – even pampered,” boasts their … [Read more...]

Vanessa Colunga’s art is filled with images of monsters, aliens and the stuff of nightmares. But her art transforms nightmares into works admired and appreciated.  Vanessa says, “Scrawling out stick figures for my parents and grandparents is one of my first vivid memories as a child.” People always ask her how long she’s been making art and she always gives the same … [Read more...]

Moab’s Base Camp Adventure Lodge

October 20, 2015 by Richard Markosian Leave a Comment

In the Moab 4x4 Center, conversation turns to abandoned uranium mines. Tom Higginson, I’m told, extensively explored mines in the area. One he frequented contained historic relics including a table, cups and chairs and a jacket, as if the miners who worked there went out for a stroll 70 years ago and never came back. Tom was living in the old Camelot Lodge space, they said, … [Read more...]

October 19, 2015 by Bettyanne Bruin Leave a Comment

No longer will high school students, interested in a career in aerospace, have to leave the state to see their dreams come true, thanks to Governor Gary R. Herbert’s announcement, on September 6, 2015, regarding the Utah Aerospace Pathways Program. Funded by a $400,000 grant from the Utah Cluster Acceleration Partnership (UCAP), this  organization is comprised … [Read more...]
