Pictures fade. Memories vanish. Stone stays. A person's tombstone will far outlast their brief time on earth. Names, dates, thoughts - "They will last hundreds of years, easy," says Justin Daniels of Salt Lake Monument. Located across from Salt Lake City Cemetery, the shop has been carving tombstones since 1890. Justin has been a stone artisan for 20 years. … [Read more...]

University of Utah Body Donor Program
The dead help teach the living through the University of Utah Body Donor Program. Last year, over 200 individuals chose to donate their bodies to science. Kerry Peterson, who directs the program, said the reason for doing so is unique for each individual, but the common thread is altruism. “We have had a person as young as 13 and as old as 108 donate their bodies. People … [Read more...]
Babs In The City
Salt Lake County Health Department’s new brochure bespeaks fecal matter. That’s because it is about the ‘Proper Clean-Up of Human Waste and Drug Paraphernalia’. If you haven’t noticed, there’s a lot of poop on the ground these days, particularly downtown and in our parks. I’m not talking the usual dog doo found on the random sidewalk or lawn, but human dung dropped at the back … [Read more...]
Twist – Salt Lake’s New Bar and Bistro
“We serve high-end cocktails, but we’re not an upscale bar. We have cheap drinks, but we’re not a dive bar. We have sports on the TV, but we’re not a sports bar; and we have music, but we’re not a club.” This is how Brett Kirk describes Twist, the most recent addition to downtown Salt Lake’s bar and bistro scene. Brett has partnered with co-owners Phil Palmer and … [Read more...]

Moab’s Base Camp Adventure Lodge
In the Moab 4x4 Center, conversation turns to abandoned uranium mines. Tom Higginson, I’m told, extensively explored mines in the area. One he frequented contained historic relics including a table, cups and chairs and a jacket, as if the miners who worked there went out for a stroll 70 years ago and never came back. Tom was living in the old Camelot Lodge space, they said, … [Read more...]
