More Jazz in Utah than the Basketball Team

March 26, 2014 by Richard Markosian Leave a Comment

“I hate jazz.” My wife declared, “and I’m not going.” Our night was off to a rough start. I had promised my friend, who gave us the tickets, that I would attend the concert of jazz guitarist John Pizzarelli at the Capitol Theater. So, feeling obligated, I told my wife that we had to go, and perhaps we would be pleasantly surprised. It’s a rare treat when you go into … [Read more...]

Bohemian Brewery Designs a New 12-pack that Remembers Founder Joe Petras

March 22, 2014 by Heather May Leave a Comment

[showtime] When you buy Bohemian Brewery’s new variety 12-pack, you’re also purchasing a history lesson. The brown box, decorated with black and red graphics, is covered with historic tidbits, facts about the “old school” techniques the Midvale brewers practiced, and about the background of the 12-pack’s three beers. Inside includes a picture of the brewery’s late … [Read more...]

Charley and the Jewelry Factory

March 21, 2014 by Erika Kirsch Leave a Comment

Local jeweler Charley Hafen is a superior craftsman in the truest sense. Primarily self-taught, Hafen creates jewelry reaching a dichotomy of delicate and substantial. His custom pieces could easily become gaudy or too much, but he manages a balance that to fully understand must be seen and touched. A high school arts and crafts teacher sparked a creativity in Hafen and he’s … [Read more...]

Starting at the brewery in 1999 after a drive across the country looking for breweries led him to Utah, Haas has been given free reign at the brewery to brew any beer he wants.  The brewery started in 1995, with … [Read more...]

Last year, Epic opened a brewery in Denver. The new space has four times the capacity of their Salt Lake facility and will help them distribute product to the Midwest and East Coast. Reassuringly however, they will not relocate from Salt Lake. “Our headquarters are still in Salt Lake and we plan on staying here,” says Matthew Allred, Epic’s Communications Director. In fact, … [Read more...]

Moab, Utah on the Rise

March 20, 2014 by Richard Markosian Leave a Comment

Two Local Businessmen Discuss the Growth of Utah's Popular Small Town Should Moab grow or should it remain a quaint small town? Many people believe that this is truly an either/or question. The editor of Moab’s Zephyr newspaper decided to leave Moab for Montecello because he determined the city had already been overdeveloped and overpopulated. There are hundreds of Utah towns … [Read more...]

Kannah Creek

For our first stop on our brew pub tour we were in the college town of Grand Junction, also known as "GJ" we learned from the bar tender who said, "Yea, GJ's actually a lot of fun for being such a small town." Grand Junction's Kannah Creek was an exceptional brew pub. We sampled their Land's End Amber, it had nice citrus hints and was full-bodied. Michael tried their Broken … [Read more...]

Fast forward to 1964. Young Larry Stillman was living in Germany and not only discovered but fell in love with Fassbrause. He brought the formula to Utah, called it Apple Beer, and the … [Read more...]
