Joseph F. Smith served his mission in Hawaii (then known as the Sandwich Islands). He developed a close kinship with the Pacific Islanders and corresponded with them in their native language. Some believe the town of Iosepa was abandoned because Smith believed after his death that nobody would care to look after them.
