Mayor Becker Outreach

Mayor Ralph Becker invites Salt Lake City residents to join him for a "Saturday Morning with the Mayor" event Saturday, July 19, 2008, 9:00 a.m. at the Mestizo Coffee House in Salt Lake City. The Mayor and members of the City staff will be on hand to visit and answer questions from the public. The Mestizo Coffee House is a newly opened business established by one of Salt Lake City's beloved local artists, Ruby Chacon.

 

The event is a continuation of the campaign promise Mayor Becker made to be open and accessible and to focus on the City at the neighborhood level.

Sugar House Stories Workshop


Date: Saturday, July 18

Place: Westminster College Campus, Nightingale Hall, Room 6

Last year, Westminster College and Brolly Arts began a community history project called "Sugar House Stories." Part of that project's goal is to develop a computer site where community members can add their photos and reminiscences to the materials that have been gathered at the earlier story-telling events.

Community members will learn how to add materials to the Placeography site. There are only 24 spaces available, so please respond by July 14th to reserve your place.

City Council Meeting

The Council will receive a briefing and hold a public hearing on two items located in District Seven:

 

Redeemer Lutheran Request for Rezone - 1955 Stafford Avenue

A zoning map amendment request from Redeemer Lutheran Church and School to rezone property located at approximately 1955 East Stratford Avenue from Open Space (OS) to Institutional (I) (Petition No. 400-06-49).

 

Locally Preferred Alternative for Sugar House Transit Corridor and UTA

A proposed resolution to adopt a locally preferred alternative for the Utah Transit Authority to extend transit options within the Sugar House Transit Corridor.

 

The Work Session briefings will be held during the 3:00 p.m. meeting, with the Public Hearings beginning at 7:00 p.m. with the formal meeting.

Salt Lake City TV Programming Schedule

 

Salt Lake City TV (Channel 17) has provided the schedule for the upcoming week. The schedule can be viewed by visiting the website www.slctv.com. The current schedule includes programs highlighting effective cycling, prescription drug awareness, pedestrian safety, and various Council Meetings.

Updates:

I-80, State Street to 1300 East

 

Sugar House Bridge Construction Information:

 

Highland Drive - Complete

Highland Drive, under I-80, will remain closed to vehicle traffic through early August.  This closure allows the bridge structure to be reinforced from underneath using supports that sit on the roadway.  The extra supports are needed for the remaining bridges to cross overhead.  Highland Drive is open to pedestrian and bicycle traffic.

900 East - Equipment used to lower the bridge will be moved today, July 9th, and bridge reinforcements will be placed

900 East, under I-80, will remain closed to vehicle traffic through early August.  900 East will open to pedestrian and bicycle traffic on Thursday, July 10th. 

700 East - Bridge will move from the bridge farm on Friday, July 11th 

The following traffic restrictions will be in place to accommodate this move:

700 East, under I-80, closed on July 8th and will remain closed for approximately two weeks.  Motorists should use State Street or 1300 East as an alternate.  The eastbound off-ramp to 700 East will remain open; however traffic will only be able to travel southbound on 700 East. 

1300 East - from Wilmington Avenue to south of the bridge structure, will be closed on Friday, July 11th from 10:00 p.m. to midnight.

1300 East off-ramp from westbound I-80 will be closed on Friday, July 11th from 10:00 p.m. to midnight.

I-80 will have traffic restrictions on Friday, July 11th; these restrictions are currently being finalized.  Please watch for an email update or check the website (www.udot.utah.gov/i80) for the restriction details. 

 

Construction Activities with Traffic Impacts:

 

Activity:  Construction crews will install Advanced Traffic Management Systems (ATMS) fiber optic cable at the 2100 South and 700 East intersection.

Traffic Restrictions:  Crews will be working in the outside lanes of 700 East.  This work will take place during daytime hours and last until late-June.  Three northbound lanes and three southbound lanes will remain open during this construction. 

 

Ramp Closures:

State Street - All ramps open

700 East* - Westbound on- & off-ramps closed; Eastbound on-ramp closed; Eastbound off-ramp is open but traffic can only access southbound 700 East for approximately two weeks

1300 East - Westbound on-ramp closed until early August

*The 700 East westbound on-ramp and eastbound on-ramp will re-open in late fall.  The 700 East westbound off-ramp will re-open following the 700 East bridge placement. 

 

General Construction Activities:

Utilities:

Rocky Mountain Power is relocating power poles along 700 East.   This work will be complete in mid-July.
